If you like chocolate but you also want to be refreshed this summer – this Summer Chocolate Smoothie Bowl is for you!
During the summer most of us want a refreshing meal that’s going to cool us down instead of us making us feel heavy and warm. Smoothie bowls are where it’s at! Even this Summer Chocolate Smoothie Bowl! You might be thinking Chocolate in the summer? Yes! Think of it like you’re sitting down and eating a Wendy’s Frosty but a nutrient dense version that will make you feel wonderful (and that also comes with zero guilt no matter how much you eat).
If you are new to thick smoothie bowls and do not have a high-speed blender when I would not recommend you try them. You can make a smoothie
though.
Why?
I use a Vitamix blender for my smoothies and smoothie bowls.
This one actually. I LOVE IT! BUT smoothie bowls are VERY THICK if you do them correctly and they will ruin a “cheaper” or low-quality blender that is not made for thick dishes.
I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE!
I used a Ninja blender. This one is exactly because it came with a tamper (the stick that you use to push down the ingredients in a blender) and looked very similar to a Vitamix but trying to make a smoothie bowl in it ruined it immediately. I’m not even exaggerating…immediately.
I brought it home.
I opened it.
I put my ingredients in it.
I turned it on and started using the tamper to blend the
ingredients and thicken it up..
And it started to smoke and completely fried it.
A NEW BLENDER DEAD IN 5 MINUTES
Ok.
So I thought maybe the blender was the problem but nope.
I CALLED BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WAS DEFECTIVE (they sent me another one) AND NOPE.
I tried it again and it almost caught fire.
So..trust me. Do not make smoothie bowls in blenders that are not made for it.
I did see that Ninja released a smoothie bowl maker soon after my incident, but I never tried it. That might work fine. I have seen some videos on it, and it looks legit.
So, after this, I splurged and got a Vitamix. As a homemaker that is ON A TIGHT BUDGET, it was an investment. I was very nervous. I was so scared it wouldn’t be everything I had hoped for.
A little context. I did tons of research on Vitamix. I
watched videos. I saw tons of tutorials. I made sure it was worth it. And simply put, it was. I am in love with the quality! Vitamix has the same reputation as KitchenAid. They are known to last forever and be tough. My grandma has a 40-year-old KitchenAid, and she still uses it regularly.
I got my Vitamix, and it has been a dream. I think it has
been 5 years now. If you do not make smoothies, smoothie bowls, or just blend in general – don’t get it. It was expensive. It is an investment.
I made 2 smoothies a day for 2 years before I started
wanting to learn about smoothie bowls. I was working my way up to a high plant-based diet so by the time I wanted a Vitamix it was no longer a want but a need. And now I use it at least 1-2 times a day.
Don’t ruin your blender (and waste money) like I did.
I hope you found that helpful.
Now back to the Summer Chocolate Smoothie Bowl. I did tons of experimenting to see what flavors were in the smoothie bowls I had in Hawaii and replicated it as best as I could.
And I learned that coconut is in almost every Hawaiian dish. Cacao Nibs is also in this recipe. If you have never heard of Cacao Nibs like me years ago it is basically “chocolate” in its most natural form. Unprocessed
cacao so it is very bitter. I would not recommend you eat it alone. But in a recipe and in all my recipes it fits right in. It’s great. It does have a harder texture because it is not felted down like the chocolate that we know
and it’s not smooth but it’s worth a try. It is very nutrient dense and heavy in antioxidants.
Many smoothie shops and health-minded restaurants use it religiously. If you do not want to use it -that’s fine – use dairy-free chocolate chips. These chocolate chips (that I linked) JUST TASTE BETTER than regular ones that have dairy, nuts, and added sugar. These are the best ones I have ever had, and I have them in tons of recipes. When I’m also not in the mood for cacao nibs (that does happen) I use these. SO GOOD! Highly recommend you try these. You won’t ever go back to normal chocolate chips.
I hope you enjoy this recipe and want to try out some of my other recipes. My Summer Berry Smoothie is perfect for berry lovers! My “Frosty” Smoothie Bowl is also another chocolate-based smoothie bowl
that you do not want to miss. Make sure to tell me your thoughts!”
Summer Chocolate Smoothie Bowl
Tiffany BritoEquipment
- High Quality Blender *I use a Vitamix*
Ingredients
- 2 Whole Frozen Bananas
- ¼ Cup Unsweetened Plant-Based Milk (I prefer homemade almond milk) *Add more liquid if need be but only a very small amount at a time.*
- ⅓ Cup Cacao Nibs
- 1 tbsp Vanilla extract *Can substitute for a small amount of vanilla protein powder if you prefer but may need to add more liquid.*
- 1 Packet of Pitaya Foods Organic Coconut *or ½ a cup of real coconut if you have it.*
- 1 tbsp Coconut Nectar or Date Sugar *This is optional. Sometimes I leave it out depending on my sweetness mood for the day. Banana is already sweet so it's going to be good no matter what!*
Instructions
- Peel and freeze bananas overnight if you do not have any frozen already. Make sure to break the banana into 3-4 pieces and lay flat so you can easily pull them apart once they are frozen. This makes it easier on your blender.
- Add milk to the bottom of the blender.
- Add your remaining ingredients and blend. I like to top mine with more cacao nibs, peanut butter, or raw granola. Make it fun!
